Corporations. Are they keeping us poor?

When a profitable corporation lays off employees in order to “streamline services”, “improve customer experience” or for similar motivation, should that corporation assist the former employee with their retraining for other gainful occupations, or is the corporation without further obligation? If the laid-off employees cannot find gainful occupation and are reduced to receiving unemployment or welfare, both of which are paid by the public purse (your taxes), isn’t that a de-facto subsidy of the corporation? Should a profitable corporation be disallowed to award performance bonuses to executives if the performance increases are due to reduced employment costs, rather than any action that actually improves the corporation’s product or service?
